This morning we had a unique opportunity to chat with Texas Governor, Rick Perry, at the Construction Expo where we are participating as exhibitors. Prior to his speech for the Proclamation Ceremony, Gov. Perry spent about ten minutes with us backstage, discussing the pros and cons about living and working in California as opposed to living and working in Texas. We shared the AccuBuild Construction Software story with him and he was genuinely happy to hear it.

Not too long ago, we decided to move AccuBuild’s headquarters to Austin, TX instead of Ontario, CA. We felt the tech industry was thriving in Austin and the opportunities for growth were much bigger. As a family-owned business, that meant our entire family packed up and headed to Texas.

During his speech to a large, attentive audience, he mentioned the AccuBuild story by discussing the popularity of “reverse migration” which he described as people moving their families and businesses from CA to TX.  Gov. Perry joked that 20% of Americans have relocated to Texas and it isn’t just for the great BBQ, live music and cold beer.

“People aren’t moving to Texas by accident,” he said. “In 2008, only ten states created jobs and Texas created 60% of those jobs. The innovative business climate in Texas is powerful,” he added. He discussed how Austin is managing to thrive even in the struggling economy and used our “1 out of 961 homes in foreclosure” stats as an example.

It is obvious that Gov. Perry is genuinely proud of Texas for making good business decisions and keeping taxes low. Our favorite part of the speech was when he talked about the budget surplus and joked, “they don’t even know what that means in California!”

AccuBuild Construction Software Moves Headquarters

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Last week, AccuBuild Construction Software moved its offices to a larger location in Round Rock, Texas. Despite the struggling economy, technology for commercial and industrial construction companies  makes a lot of sense. Companies have less room for errors and have to operate as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Construction-specific accounting software can help companies improve their processes, making life easier for the entire staff - especially Project Managers - and helping the company make more profit.

Austin Dedicated to Building the Green Life

Friday, February 27th, 2009

city-hallOne of the reasons we moved AccuBuild headquarters to Austin, was because we felt it was a cutting-edge city in terms of responsible growth - a mecca for construction.

An article in the Austin Business Journal last week addressed the green trend and what Austin is doing to actually “walk the walk,” not just “talk the talk.” It’s easy to say you’re building an eco-friendly city, yet how to do you ensure it actually is? There are new buildings in Austin like the Dell Children’s Medical Center and City Hall that have achieved green benchmarking. This is no easy feat!

City Hall was trying to meet 37 of the 38 criteria set by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).  There is also a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) checklist including six categories like: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality and innovation and design process.

It takes a huge team of intelligent resourceful minds to bring these ideals to fruition. For example, during excavation of City Hall, workers hit water below the garage level. The water had to be diverted and was not potable, so it was pumped out and used to water the landscaping. As stated by LEED, more than half of the water used for irrigation purposes has to be obtained from non-conventional sources or be captured rainwater.

Read the article to find out how Austin plans to green its commercial real estate.
